How do I find which markets to apply to?
At the beginning, I simply searched for markets in my area — and the number of options overwhelmed me. I found a few, but I was honestly too nervous to send in an application.
Then something unexpected happened. One day, while having lunch at a local restaurant, I noticed a poster advertising a market right inside the restaurant for only £5 a table. It felt safe, manageable, and the perfect place for my very first step.
That was last December. I took cushions, clocks, tote bags, tea towels, mugs, and coasters — all printed beautifully by a company in Manchester. I didn’t have a large stock, but I learnt that you can take orders and use the day to see which products catch people’s attention.
My friend came with me, my local friends visited, and it turned into a memorable and successful first experience. I even took photos that later helped when applying for my next market.
For the second market, I visited beforehand to look around and meet the organisers. They were friendly, showed interest in my products, and I booked immediately. From there, one market led to another — often through the recommendations and stories of other stallholders.
What are your tips for a good display?
My first market display was created using whatever I had — even an empty box under a tablecloth to give some height! It actually worked.
Over time, I’ve borrowed props like platforms and hangers, added a printed price list, a discount wheel that my daughter made, and a page with my contact details and email sign-up barcode.
A balanced table is important — inviting but not overcrowded. Small touches like flower pots, banners, or signs help bring your personality into the space.
